MSc Strategic Communication and Public Relations (Mohawk College)

Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh's articulation agreement with Mohawk College, Ontario provides students who have successfully completed Mohawk College's Graduate Certificate in Public Relations with the credits towards Queen Margaret University's MSc Strategic Communication and Public Relations.

The MSc Strategic Communication and Public Relations offers an unparalleled balance in UK postgraduate courses of teaching in internal and external communication, as well as strategic communication, for both private and public sectors. Students learn from an academic team which includes internationally published researchers and practitioners with years of professional experience. QMU is an accredited teaching centre of the UK's professional body, the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR); a partner institution of the UK's Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA) and is the only UK institution to offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in public relations and teach the CIPR Diploma, CIPR Internal Communication Diploma and the CIPR Public Affairs Diploma.

Exit award

MSc (180 credits). You receive 40 credits if you hold a Graduate Certificate in Public Relations from Mohawk College, Ontario. You will need to successfully complete 140 credits in specified modules at QMU to gain your MSc Strategic Communication and Public Relations.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Teaching is delivered face-to-face at our modern campus in Scotland's capital city of Edinburgh. You are also supported by QMU's online virtual learning environment. As well as lectures, seminars and workshops you will also work with live clients, respond to communication briefs, undertake analysis and research, blog, reflect, create materials and content, engage in digital media, work in groups, make presentations and develop proposals.

Teaching hours and attendance

Our carefully designed delivery pattern provides continuous and frequent face-to-face teaching for full-time students. On some modules you will learn alongside communication and PR practitioner students. This helps you extend your professional network and develop a deep understanding of the relevance of theory to practice. Our shared community of learners approach also provides access to a busy programme of activities and events offered across our PR programmes.

Entry requirements

Graduate Certificate in Public Relations from Mohawk College, Ontario, Canada


Students articulating from the Mohawk Graduate Certificate in Public Relations will be granted 40 credits.

To gain the MSc Strategic Communication and Public Relations students are required to pass the following modules:

  • Media Theory and Campaigning (20 credits)
  • Strategic Internal Communications in a Digitized World (20 credits)
  • Public Affairs (20 credits)
  • An option from the School masters option list. If you wish to do a Dissertation you will have to choose a 20 credit research methods module in this slot.
  • Master's Dissertation or Master's Project 60 credits

Any changes to either the Mohawk Graduate Certificate in Public Relations or the QMU MSc Strategic Communication and Public Relations may lead to adjustments to the above programme of studies.


In our global and digitized contemporary world, communication plays an increasingly important role in virtually any aspect of social, cultural, political or economic life. Consequently, organisations of all types - governmental, public sector, profit making, third sector, activist - recognise the need to draw on public relations and communications expertise.

Today's public relations and communication professionals are positioned at the highest levels in organisations. They guide policy and practice and contribute to the development of responsive, responsible and ethically sound organisations. Their field of expertise is broad, covering a range of specialisms including management of digital channels; content creation: social media engagement; media relations; event development and management; dialogue and conversation creation; policy development; political campaigning, crisis management and image, identity and culture guardianship.

Being considered a professional is important to public relations practitioners (CIPR 2015 State of the Profession) and establishing yourself as a professional requires qualification. Over 90% of those who responded to the UK CIPR’s 2018 State of the Profession report hold a university degree, with around a third holding a degree at masters level.  Industry training and qualification as one of the top four mechanisms employed to judge professional standards of public relations practitioners according to this report.

The UK's professional bodies - the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and the Public Relations and Communications Association - back university qualification through accreditation of universities and sponsor higher education level qualifications.

Graduates from QMU's postgraduate public relations courses have gone on to work as PR and communication managers for major organisations, in both the public and private sectors, and in global consultancies.
