Human Resources for Health
New Qualification in HRH available in West Asia and EMRO
JANUARY 2012
We announce a new partnership between the Institute for International Health and Development, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, and the Health Services Academy, Islamabad, Pakistan, offering a post-graduate qualification in Human Resource for Health Management. These two institutions have come together to strengthen the regional capacity to respond to the health workforce crisis. This innovative collaboration offers opportunities for intensive study in Pakistan at the Health Services Academy. The programme is taught in modules at HSA jointly by QMU faculty and HSA faculty and students are registered as QMU distance learners. This gives full electronic access to QMU facilities such as library and learning support through WebCT. The medium of instruction is English.
The programme is aimed at health professionals and health managers who are tasked with developing local, provincial or national solutions to the health workforce crisis in their country. The educational programme is designed for experienced staff, uses innovative adult learning approaches and aims to develop competencies in the four major workforce domains – policy, workforce planning (strategic and operational); workforce production; and, workforce management/development. The course is open to staff who wish to move from more generic health management, public administration or commercial environments into the specialist health HR environment.
Participants can enrol for either full-time or part-time study – the full-time programme lasts one full 15 week semester and comprises three modules. Part –time participants can take one or two modules in each year of study until they have completed the requisite three modules. Part-time learners are expected to attend for the two week residential programme in each module and can return home to complete the module assignments. On completion of the programme, students will receive a Post-Graduate Certificate in Human Resource for Health Management from Queen Margaret Edinburgh, Edinburgh. Credits are transferrable to the Masters programmes of both institutions.
The German donor agency GIZ have been proactive in supporting and developing the PGCert in HHRM in West Asia. They sponsor eligible candidates through their country support programmes, and are supporting a new programme of research in HRH more widely throughout Asia. Potential students wishing to apply for GIZ scholarships should apply direct to GIZ in their own country. Most scholarships are offered once applicants are accepted onto the programme and they have an offer letter from QMU to confirm their place
Our successful programme commenced in January 2011, and it will be offered every year starting in January. Applications can be received at HSA or QMU. Details can also be found at www.hsa.edu.pk or contact IIHD@qmu.ac.uk
